ICU Update 2008

The need to avoid sepsis in intensive care units was stressed here on Sunday at “ICU Update 2008” organised by Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH). The hospital said in a press release that the programme served as a continuing medical education for healthcare providers, as specialists in intensive care spoke on how sepsis proved to be the biggest killer in intensive care units and on how to prevent it.

Topics such as “Community Acquired Meningitis”, “Catheter Associated Blood stream Infections” and “Evaluating a New Fever in the ICU” were discussed.

Consultant Intensivist from Sundaram Medical Foundation in Chennai Ram Rajagopalan, Consultant- Infectious Diseases at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, V. Ramasubramaniam and Consultant Intensivist at Apollo Hospital Ramesh Venkataraman spoke on the management of sepsis. In his message for the programme, KMCH Chairman Nalla G. Palaniswami said the sepsis syndrome consisted of a spectrum of disorders.

“It is a forerunner of the multi-organ dysfunction syndrome,” he said. “We produce newer and newer antibiotics, but the organisms are becoming resistant to most of them.” It was necessary to conduct continuing medical education programmes on this problem to help doctors overcome this menace, he said.
