Children Not Getting Nutritious Food

Poor infrastructure in schools, a non-student centred system of education, unsafe drinking water at home and schools and lack of nutritious food are just a few of the myriad problems faced by children today. At a State-level convention held in Tirupur recently, the children representing various sections of society spoke about the issues of concern to them. Children from orphanages, regular schools, children with disabilities and street children discussed their problems.

State-level convention held in Tirupur recently, the children representing various sections of society spoke about the issues of concern to them.

Organised by Don Bosco Nest, Tirupur, along with Don Bosco Anbu Illam, Coimbatore, in connection with the International Anti-Child Labour Day, the convention sought to address the issues of children with special focus on education and health. Lack of nutritious food was also leading to children becoming more anaemic. About 3,000 children from Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore and Madurai attended the convention. An exhibition on the “Health and Education of Children” was organised.

The 20 stalls put up by NGOs and Government organisations such as Integrated Child Development Services, Kovai CLASS, and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, displayed posters related to child labour.“The exhibition was included to make the participants aware of the methods to tackle children’s issues,” said Fr. Santhanam, Director, Don Bosco Nest. All the demands of the children would be compiled and the draft, “Charter of the Coimbatore Children,” would be submitted to the Government, he added.
