Special Camp By District Employment Office
Students who passed Plus-Two waiting to register at a special camp conducted by the District Employment Office at Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore. If one thought the crowd gathered at CSI Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science on Friday had come for admission to the college, a closer looks revealed something else.
Admissions were indeed going on, but the majority of the crowd that had come, was to register at the camp organised by the District Employment Office. It was held for those who had passed Plus-Two. After last year’s rush at the Employment Office that led to some girls swooning, the camps this year are being held in different venues in Coimbatore, Pollachi, Tirupur and Valparai, in a staggered manner. This change has definitely yielded results. The whole process was done in an orderly manner in classrooms, without the need for candidates to bear the brunt of the sweltering heat.
“The camp began on Wednesday. It was initially planned for three days. But, now seeing the response, we have extended it by two days. The camp will now be held on Monday and Tuesday also. From 390 on Wednesday, we have more than 1,000 candidates on Friday,” said superintendent K. Maheswaran. In addition, at the Coimbatore office, Assistant Director L. Sivasami is registering the candidates. What stood out was the number of girl candidates. It was almost in the 60:40 ratio vis-À-vis the male candidates. Mr. Maheswaran said that this was the case from the beginning of the camp.
What was common among both was that almost all of them wanted to pursue a degree. Then why did they have to register with the Employment Office? Would they not get better private jobs once they complete their degree? It did not come as a surprise when the boys said that it was “for a formality” and the girls said that it was “for job security.” A.S. Shabnam from a Government school in Madukkarai has come to renew her registration that she did when she completed her Standard X. She has plans to update the registration once she completes her B.Com CA degree that she intends to take up.
All her classmates follow the same principle. All of them seemed to have come on their own and not because of the compulsion of their parents. Sherlin Victoria and her classmates from Varadarajapuram too believe in the same principle. She plans to complete her BBM and update the registration that she was getting done now. The officials say that there are many Government vacancies that are waiting to be filled. Whatever may be the reason, it is refreshing to note that in spite of the highly salaried private jobs, Government jobs have not lost their charm among the student community.
