AITUC Demands Resumption Of Saradha Mill

The Coimbatore District Mill Workers’ Union affiliated to the AITUC has demanded resumption of operations at Sri Saradha Mills. A release from the union said that the mill, which was one of the National Textile Corporation units here, was not functioning for the last five months. The mill had about 240 workers, including 70 permanent workers. Though the employees were willing to work, the management had stopped running the unit and the workers were being compelled to opt for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme, the union alleged.

Though several discussions had been held with the management to resume operations, the management had failed to do so. The union planned to stage a demonstration on May 27 demanding permanent employment for the 170 workers, ensuring employment for all workers of the mill and resuming production.
