Consumer Body Alleges For Health Hazards

A number of vacant lands and open house sites have been turned into garbage dumps. These are posing health hazards to people, Citizens’ Voice Club secretary C.M. Jeyaraam has said in a letter to Collector V. Palanikumar recently. The letter, copies of which have been addressed to heads of municipalities and town panchayats in the suburbs, said such sites in various residential colonies were full of bushes and people living nearby dumped garbage on these. In some areas, the plots were turned into public toilets.

The Coimbatore Corporation should instruct its health officials to identify such sites and take measures to prevent health hazards to the public. The consumer body also called for proper use of reserved sites and steps to prevent these from being sold. Misuse of the sites should be dealt with sternly. Playgrounds, parks, community hall and libraries were some of the facilities that could come up on these sites, the letter said.
