Corp Handed Over 21 Houses

The Coimbatore Corporation handed over on Tuesday 21 houses constructed at Noyyal Nagar at Ondipudur in the city under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy handed over the keys for the houses to the beneficiaries.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Deputy Mayor N. Karthik and East Zone Chairman of the Corporation S.M. Samy were present at the function to hand over the keys. The Minister said that the scheme aimed at providing all basic amenities to the poor people living in the city. Under the Rs. 373-crore scheme, houses were to be built for more than a lakh people living in the slums in the city.

The project would be implemented in three phases. In the first phase, 5,186 houses would be built at Rs. 58.51 crore for 23,337 people. In the second phase, 10,947 houses would be built at Rs. 199 crore for 46,279 people. The cost of each house, measuring less than 200 sq.ft. was Rs. 1.12 lakh. Of this, the beneficiaries had to contribute Rs. 48,000. The Corporation had arranged for bank loans amounting to Rs. 20,000 a beneficiary in order to enable these people to make their contribution. Under the third phase of the scheme, the Corporation planned to re-locate 91 slums on water bodies and road margins.
