Library For Visully Impaired Students

A visually impaired student testing a cassette at Bharathi Lions Talking Book Library at Nirmala College for Women which will be inaugurated on June 30. Coimbatore is all poised to get a talking book library. Meant for the visually impaired, the Bharathi Lions Talking Book Library, will house compact discs (CDs) and audio cassettes. A joint attempt of Bharathiar University and Lions Club International District 324 B1, the library which is at Nirmala College for Women, will be inaugurated on June 30, Vice-Chancellor of the university G. Thiruvasagam told a press conference here on Thursday. Second of its kind in the State after Madurai, the library would initially have CDs and cassettes on 1,000 titles. They would cover a range of general topics, novels, writings of famous personalities, etc. All material as per the university syllabus for all subjects would also be available.


“There are at least three visually impaired students in each of the affiliated colleges of the university. They have to study only from Braille books and notebooks. The library will make learning easier for them,” the Vice-Chancellor said. Students could select the name of the book they want to “read” from a catalogue that would be in Braille. Name of books will be on cassettes or CD’s in Braille to enable the candidate to choose without difficulty. Once the cassette is selected, the student could borrow it or listen to it at the library itself. Cassette players have been made available for use.



People from outside Coimbatore too could borrow cassettes over post. They could use it and Liversion,” Mr. Thiruvasagam added.
