Plastic Ban

I will do my best to keep Coimbatore city clean,” K.P. Mythili, who lives in an apartment near Suburban High School at Ramnagar in the city, said on Saturday after receiving a cloth bag from Mayor R. Venkatachalam. The Mayor had just then launched Residents’ Awareness Association of Coimbatore’s “One cloth bag for every 10 plastic bags” programme.
“I take a cloth bag to shop ,” she said. Ms. Mythili said she began to shun plastic carry bags after the Coimbatore Corporation and RAAC launched a campaign a month ago to sensitise people to the dangers posed by plastics. With students already handing over plastic bags to RAAC and taking home cloth bags, the programme was extended to residents at a function on Saturday at the Suburban School.

A loud promise by students to RAAC vice-president Vanita Mohan that they would work to eliminate the menace of plastics and a pledge administered by the Mayor at the function sought to showcase this section’s support to the drive. The Mayor warned that generations in the future would struggle for water if corrective measures were not taken now. He was referring to discarded plastic bags and other waste forming an impenetrable layer in the soil and preventing rain water reaching the ground water table.
