Sucide Attempt
Tension gripped the outskirts of the city for nearly three hours in Maruthamalai area today when a construction worker climbed atop a 200-foot tall cell tower and threatened to jump down from there this afternoon. Police said that the worker, hailing from Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district, climbed atop the tower and stood at a height of 120 feet and threatened to jump from there.The man warned some policemen, who rushed to the spot and attempted to climb the tower to bring him down. Police immediately requisitioned the services of fire and rescue personnel, who appealed him to come down, to no avail.
Some personnel managed to climb up and bring down the youth, bringing down the curtains on the nearlty three hour drama, police said. The man had reportedly brought some 20 workers from his home town. He decided to take the extreme step as the building contractor failed to give weekly payments, they said.
