Human resources in science and technology is a major factor in a country’s ability to generate and adopt new technology and new business practices, C. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, said here recently. Delivering the convocation address of the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, he said despite India having a rich legacy of contribution to advancement in science and technology, sustaining a high growth rate these days was a challenging task.“This is because of the increasing inequality in the economic policies and also the allocation of funds for research and development is less than one per cent of the Gross Domestic Product.”“Policies on research and development have greater impact on scientific discoveries, technological breakthroughs and inventions. However, education is the best option for making growth more inclusive,” said the Vice-Chancellor. He said that venture capital, offering tax incentives to business establishments, business funding of university research and co-operation between industry and public research institutions had been a major policy target in recent years. He exhorted the graduating engineers to become entrepreneurs.
“With life-long learning, imagining and believing in oneself and daring to achieve, one can become a successful entrepreneur,” Mr. Ramasamy said. As many as 252 candidates from B.E., 92 from B. Tech., 41 from part-time B.E., 106 from B. Sc applied sciences and computer technology, and 95 from other streams received certificates. S.R.K. Prasad, Director of the institute and R.
