BJP Appeal For Rail Overbridges
The Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to the Union Railway Minister to consider provision of rail overbridges on arterial roads in Coimbatore district. In a memorandum, State Secretary of the party G.K.S. Selvakumar stated that Coimbatore district witnessed a lot of traffic by virtue of its status as an industrial town, besides tourist and medical care destination. The National Highway 209 connecting Dindigul with Mysore crosses Pollachi and Coimbatore and it witnessed heavy volume of traffic. Under such circumstances, closure of railway gate at Eachanari and Koilpalayam even for 10 minutes affected traffic flow for nearly half-an-hour with vehicles getting lined up on either side for more than 2 km.
With inadequate running time, the buses that get held up at the railway gates tend to compensate for the loss of time by unleashing terror on the roads. In spite of Coimbatore being the largest revenue earner for Southern Railway next to Chennai, it was unfortunate that the Railways had not bothered to construct rail overbridges. It was time the Railway Ministry initiated the required measures in co-ordination with the State Government to construct railway gates.Mr. Selvakumar also reminded the ministry to construct rail overbridges on Madukkarai Sundarapuram market road and on Mettupalayam Road at Karmadai.
