Coimbatore Short News:

Conference :

Avinashilingam University and Texas Tech University will organise here a conference on ‘Advances in textiles, machinery, non-woven and technical textiles’ from July 14 to 16. Technical sessions will also be held.

Job Fair:

The District Employment Exchange will organise a job fair here on July 11. According to a release, candidates who have completed SSLC, Plus-Two, graduation, computer courses, ITI or diploma can participate at the fair that will start at 10.30 a.m. Private companies will select candidates.

Office Bearer Elected:

N. Ramesh Natarajan has been elected president of the Auditors’ Association of Southern India, Coimbatore chapter. The other office-bearers elected at the annual general meeting of the association are: M.S. Raj Seckhar (vice-president), M. Ramji (secretary) and P. Gnanasundaram (treasurer).

BU Admission:

The admissions for the Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneur Development (BSMED) of the Bharathiar University will be held on July 16 at the university premises.According to R. Venkatapathy, BSMED’s Director, the selection process for the candidates who had applied for admission was held on July 3 and 4. The list of the selected 120 candidates has been published in the university’s website http://www.b-u.ac.in/.

Deputy Tahsildar Arrested:

The sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Thursday arrested a Zonal Deputy Tahsildar, P. Balasubramanian (56) of Avanashi on charges of graft. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 8,000 for issuing a patta name transfer. According to DVAC sources, a complaint was received from Dhandapani (25) of Rakkiapalayam village stating that the Deputy Tahsildar was demanding a bribe of Rs. 10,000. It is learnt that the application form for name transfer was filed on June 20 and was supposed to have been processed and given on July 4. With Balasubramanian finally demanding Rs. 8,000 for issuing the certificate, the complainant approached the DVAC. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, DVAC, D. Shanmugapriya, deputed a team to lay the trap. The officers caught the Deputy Tahsildar red-handed when he accepted the bribe from Dhandapani.

Three held :
The City Police have arrested three persons and have recovered 20 sovereigns of jewellery. Talking to reporters, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), K. Thondiraj, said that special teams were formed by the Commissioner of Police, K.C. Mahali. The special teams that probed into the incident of a house break at Visalakshi Nagar in Kovaipudur wherein the burglars looted jewellery and cash from the house of Ganeshkumar, an insurance firm employee. The teams arrested Vijaykumar (27), an engineering diploma holder, Murthy alias Adhikesavamurthy (29) and Suresh (22). The first accused was involved in 14 cases and was already under detention for one year while the second accused had three cases against him and was again under detention under Goondas Act. The third accused Suresh was said to be involved in robbery incidents at Tirupur.

DVDs stolen:


The Palladam police have launched a search for three women who had stolen three DVD players from a shop where they had come under the pretext of buying some electrical/electronic gadgets. The shop owner Subramanian had stated that the women had walked out after concealing the DVD players in their saris.

Jewellery stolen :
Peelamedu police are probing into a case of a culprit stealing the handbag of a guest at a house at Thirumagal Nagar in Peelamedu. It is learnt that Ramesh and his wife had come as a guest to their family friend’s house and stayed there for two days. The culprit had managed to cut the mosquito mesh and steal the handbag that contained two rings and three cellular phones. The handbag was found abandoned near the house.

Students block road :
Students at Thotti Appichi Koil, near Sedapalayam, in Palladam staged a road block demanding that the bus plying up to Sedapalayam should be extended to their area at least for one trip at 8.00 a.m. for the benefit of those going to school.

Man held :
Special teams of the City Police have arrested Y. Chamraj (23) of Rathinapuri and recovered two two-wheelers that were stolen from the busy shopping area in the city.

Drug vendor detained :
The City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali has ordered the detention of A. Jayakumar of Kallamedu in Selvapuram under the National Security Act for one year. Jayakumar (47) was arrested by the Selvapuram Police on June 16 when he was found in possession of one kg and 100 grams of ganja. A case was registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Investigations revealed that he was already involved in three other ganja cases.
