DRDO Joins With BU For Antiplastic Drive
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is likely to share the knowhow on manufacturing bio-degradable bags, using husk as an alternative to plastic, with Bharathiar University (BU).The interesting fact came to light in the first senate meeting of the current academic year at BU, held on the varsity campus on Friday. In fact, even after the ban on the usage of plastic was imposed in the city, the City Corporation was finding it difficult to provide an alternative to the general public.
Some social welfare organisations were providing cloth, paper bags in exchange for the plastic bags they had collected from houses and shops. It is in this context that the issue of finding an alternative to plastics was raised at the university senate meeting. Vice-Chancellor Prof G Thiruvasagam sought suggestions from academicians and researchers if there could be any alternative to plastics. In reply to the request from BU, scientists from the DRDO expressed their interest in sharing the knowhow in making ecofriendly or bio-degradable bags using husk, rice, wheat barns and other materials. The technology is being used by the DRDO for defence purposes, a source said and added that since there is a Memorandum of Understanding between the university and the DRDO, the technology could be shared.
