DRDO Joins With BU For Antiplastic Drive

Some social welfare organisations were providing cloth, paper bags in exchange for the plastic bags they had collected from houses and shops.It is in this context that the issue of finding an alternative to plastics was raised at the university senate meeting. Vice-Chancellor Prof G Thiruvasagam sought suggestions from academicians and researchers if there could be any alternative to plastics.In reply to the request from BU, scientists from the DRDO expressed their interest in sharing the knowhow in making ecofriendly or bio-degradable bags using husk, rice, wheat barns and other materials.The technology is being used by the DRDO for defence purposes, a source said and added that since there is a Memorandum of Understanding between the university and the DRDO, the technology could be shared.
