The Director of Town Panchayats, K. Gopal, on Monday inspected the total sanitation infrastructure projects in town panchayats such as Vellakinar and Thudialur in Coimbatore.
Mr. Gopal along with the Assistant Director, Jayaraman, visited the sewage treatment plants being established at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh each at Vellakinar and Thudialur besides the park being established at Cheran Colony at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh. The visit coincided with the decision of the Directorate of Town Panchayats to observe July 3 to 15 as an intensive sanitation week. At Vellakinar, Mr. Gopal inspected the work for cleaning the road side drains and storm water drains and found dumping of plastic bags, bottles and garbage into the drains.
He directed the Executive Officer to conduct sensitisation programmes for the public and the merchants to ensure that they refrained from dumping garbage into drains. He also directed the local body to ensure introduction of separate dust bins for degradable and non-degradable waste. Inspecting the sewage treatment plant at Thudialur, Mr. Gopal said that the plant was at present treating nearly 2 lakh litres of sewage. He also paid a visit to the site where the treated waste water was being used for generation of manure as well as the treated water being used for watering the plants in the garden at the park.
Later, talking to reporters Mr. Gopal said that works were under way for cleaning the storm water and road side drains in all the 561 town panchayats across the State. Development of Town Panchayats was getting the required attention from the Government as well as the Local Administration Minister, as these local bodies were growing on a par with the urban local bodies. These local bodies have been asked to focus on ecological conservation, sanitation and to put the waste water into best use. In Tamil Nadu sewage treatment plants were being set up in 12 town panchayats of which Coimbatore accounted for three town panchayats.
In future, the Directorate was planning to introduce the system of using the treated waste water even for construction activities. Across the State 100 town panchayats were chosen for establishing parks. Town panchayats never faced fund constraints as they could meet their requirements with the general funds, town panchayat tax revenue and government allocation.Thudialur was getting the Under Ground Drainage scheme under the Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
