Police Service In SMS To
The Coimbatore City Police are planning to introduce a system wherein the public could pass on information through Short Messaging Service (SMS) from their mobile phones.Talking to City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali said that city police have begun a mission to embark on capacity building. The objective of bringing in the system is to ensure instant flow of information to ensure speedy and swift reaction. Mr. Mahali said that any information relating to accidents, suspicious movements, unlawful activities, criminal offence could be sent as an SMS.
The police are working out plans for putting in place a system at the Control Room where there would be a centralised cellular phone number attached to a computer and a dedicated server for storing the information. This would eliminate the ordeal of the public being forced to search for phone numbers and check for jurisdictions for passing on any information. This would also eliminate the need for people interacting with the police or those who have apprehensions in getting in touch with the police. The SMS information would be kept confidential and will be acted up on.
The messages would be stored for a particular period and the police would reach out to the informant only in the event of information being malicious aimed at harassing some body or mischievous in nature. The SMS information facility is also expected to ease the congestion witnessed in contacting the police control room by dialling 100. The system to be installed at the control room would have facilities for sorting the messages in what ever manner required. The personnel on receipt of the information would immediately inform the jurisdiction officers for initiating follow-up action. With the penetration of cellular phones among the public on a large scale , the response to this SMS concept is expected to be good , Mr. Mahali said. The entire project is in the conceptual stage and the modalities were being worked out to put the system in place as soon as possible.
