Traffic Planning Study On Mettupalayam Road

As part of the ongoing micro level traffic planning study, the Coimbatore City Police have taken up Mettupalayam Road for identifying the reasons for accidents and initiating remedial measures. On Sunday, the City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali, along with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), K. Thondiraj, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Intelligence Section), A.S. Nandakumar, and jurisdiction police officers, Project Director of National Highways Authority of India, Ramanathan, engineers of the Highways Department, engineers and councillors of the Coimbatore Corporation visited the entire stretch of the 3-4 km road.

Mr.Mahali said that the objective of the study was to rectify the road engineering defects and enforcement systems to ensure smooth flow of traffic and reduce the number of accidents. The officials inspected the road right from the Range Gowder Street – Mill Road Junction up to Sanganur bridge in Kavundampalayam where the city police limit ends. The officials decided to initiate short-term measures such as installation of barricades and motorist-friendly speed breakers especially at the road junctions where bylanes join Mettupalayam Road. Traffic signals would be set right and the entire stretch would be made available for smooth flow of traffic besides installing medians at accident-prone areas.

The police have already completed a similar study and initiated short-term remedial measures on Sathyamangalam Road, Tiruchi Road, Kamarajar Road, Avanashi Road, Palakkad Road, Marudhamalai Road and Thadagam Road. The study and choice of roads are based on the road accident mapping where the accident-prone stretches have been marked with black spots. The police are now planning to take up L&T Bypass Road, Pollachi Road and also the other Corporation roads within the city.
