Vrikshabhumi Project Launched
The City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali, on Thursday launched the Vrikshabhumi project of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore that aims at enhancing the green cover.According to K. Sundharamurthy, president, and V. Mohandas, secretary of the club, the project aims at distributing five lakh saplings in 150 days. The project will be launched by opening 50 distribution centres at places such as cinemas, petrol pumps, grocery stores, pharmacies, banks and education institutions where people frequent more.
The club would stock saplings at two yards in the city. Each person would be given two saplings along with a detailed catalogue about nurturing them. The project would be popularised using slides at cinemas and exhibition venues in the city. The Rotary had formed various committees for collecting and distributing saplings. The project is being executed under the supervision of Community Service Director Joseph M. Paul and chairman Ramesh Babu Rajagopal. Rotary is also joining hands with various Government departments and social service organisations for the implementation of the project.
