Corp Constructing Community Hall

The Coimbatore Corporation is constructing community halls on its public utility spaces. The aim is to provide a facility where the local community could assemble and celebrate festive occasions, conduct family functions and discuss issues or projects concerning development in their wards or zones. Community halls appear to be the second option after parks or playgrounds in terms of using reserved sites allocated for public purposes by residents.

One of the community halls coming up is in Ward 41, represented by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor and Corporation Council Appointments Committee member G.T. Rajendran. After reviewing the construction work, along with the councillor and Corporation officials, the civic body’s South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil said the project cost of the two-storeyed structure was Rs.38 lakh.

The ground floor would consist of a 900 sq.ft. hall and a 120 sq.ft. stage. The first floor would have a dining hall and kitchen. “The floor will have vitrified tiles. Of the total project cost, Rs.10 lakh will come from the Mayor’s Fund,” Mr. Pari said. Corporation officials said the city already had 15 community halls. Apart from the one in Ward 41, six more were being built at Rs.10 lakh each. Colonies that faced the need for such halls made a representation for these through the councillors.
