Interactive Programm

Director of the Department of Science and Technolgy, Government of India, Sujit Banerjee speaking at an interactive session at the GRD College of Science in Coimbatore on Monday. Businesses should use the appropriate technology for value addition and that will help the companies stay ahead in competition, according to Sujit Banerjee, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

He was speaking at an interactive programm eon “Technology Upgradation in Business in the Light of Global Competition” organised by Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science here on Monday. “And, the more we have knowledge of how to use the technology, it will help us stay ahead for a longer time,” he said.

Now, Indian factories were modern due to application of knowledge and technology. “Knowledge makes the capital more productive.” In the current scenario, technology and knowledge application had no physical boundary; the structure of organisations had changed. Companies were going in for flexi-timing and employees could work from home. When businesses invested in knowledge, they need to address two main issues: how to price it and how to protect the intellectual property. “Equip yourself with knowledge and have the right technology as the tool to make life simpler,” he said.

With intellectual property, the knowledge could be turned into application that was functional. Though technology and knowledge were different, the boundary was thin. Technology was market driven. Knowledge would be forever but technology was for a life time. And, technology need not be new. It could be technology upgradation and convergence. Marketing strategies could also be technology-driven.

He asked the units to explore if the technology chosen was meeting the target, leading to customer satisfaction and adding to the bottom line of the company. Answering the queries of the students, he said technology was market driven. Even in the case of agriculture, if demand was high, there would be higher level of technology in the sector. Farmers should adopt new technology. But, the matter of concern to them was affordability.
