Napkin Vending Machine At Govt School
A study conducted by the UNICEF in Kancheepuram district revealed that girl students abstained from attending classes five days a month every year. The organisation installed napkin vending machines and incinerators in every school in the district so that girl students could attend classes even during their monthly periods. Coimbatore is the second district to follow the Kancheepuram example.
Students need to drop two one rupee coins in the machine for one napkin. An incinerator for scientific disposal of used napkins has also been installed. Used napkins can be dumped into the incinerator. The specially-designed incinerator with low electricity consumption can burn more than100 napkins in half-an-hour. The incinerator, kept in a separate room, will be operated by a person after school hours. Other schools and colleges could follow the example set by the Siddhapudur school. In fact the UNICEF and the Alumni Association of Siddhapudur School were getting queries regarding the machine, authorities said.
