Additional Buses During Peak Hours For Students

District Collector V. Palanikumar has announced that additional buses would be run during peak hours for the convenience of school-going students travelling with free bus passes provided by the Government. Mr. Palanikumar had convened a meeting of the Transport Corporation authorities, Transport Department and School Education Department officials following frequent complaints about high-handed behaviour by the bus crew i.e., drivers and conductors of government buses. Students had thronged the Collectorate complaining that the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses seldom stopped at stops near schools.

They complained that they were being ill-treated by the drivers and conductors just because the students travelled with free bus passes. It was also stated that near school zones, the TNSTC drivers made it a point to stop either well ahead of the bus stop or cross the stop and halt the bus at a distance making it difficult for the students. After holding discussions, the Collector asked the TNSTC Managing Director to identify the crowded sectors that catered to more educational institutions. The Collector pointed out that the district accounted for nearly 3,700 educational institutions of which 400 schools and colleges were in and around Coimbatore city.

These educational institutions should be served by additional buses for the benefit of students during peak hours, Mr. Palanikumar said. TNSTC crew should be sensitised on the need for being compassionate towards students travelling on free bus passes. Authorities should ensure that all buses stopped at stops, he said. He asked the TNSTC authorities to make sure that even mofussil buses honoured free bus passes during peak hours. He told the TNSTC authorities to monitor the conduct of the crew and initiate action against those who continued to ill-treat students and refuse to honour bus passes.

The Collector told the school authorities and collegiate education officials to formulate a proposal for availing the services of the NSS volunteers and NCC cadets for regulating the students in boarding as well as disembarking from buses. He also exhorted the school education authorities to moot a proposal for staggering the timing of school commencement so that pressure on the public transportation system could be eased.
