Effort To Abolish Child Labour In 2010

The Kovai Child Labour Abolition Support Society has planned a series of efforts to abolish child labour in the district by 2010. D. Vijayakumar, Project Director of the programme, told The Hindu that awareness was high among the public now and some of the localities in the district had no child worker. Yet, small automobile workshops, eateries and unregistered hosiery companies were some of the sectors that still employed children. Under the directions of the District Collector, college students were conducting a door-to-door survey in the district to identify child workers. This would be completed soon and special schools would be started after September 15. Raids were being conducted almost twice a month in the three divisions – Coimbatore, Tirupur and Pollachi.

Sensitisation programmes for elected members and officers would be held at district-level and block-level. The village-level education committees would be revived so that the local people in rural areas created awareness and ensured that children went to school. Apart from these, the society was looking at special programmes. The survey would give an indication of areas that had abolished child labour, localities where the school drop-out rate was high, etc. In many places such as Tirupur, migrant workers were in large numbers. Hence, the society was considering a proposal to start a residential school. Rescued child workers could study in this school for a year and then join regular schools.

It was looking at facilitating a crèche or similar facilities for children whose parents were employed in quarries or kilns. The employers could jointly open such a facility so that the children were not on the work premises. The society could support the initiative by providing resources and play material, he said. From this year, in order to encourage the rehabilitated child workers to continue their studies, the Central Government was giving a monthly stipend of Rs. 250 per student for those who were continuing studies after Plus-Two. Similarly, it was presenting cash awards to those who scored high marks in their board examinations, he said.
