The Pollachi Sand Lorry Owners Association asked the Government to stop the ‘harassment’ of truck operators’ transporting sand on c’harges of overloading. President of the Association, Ramar presented a memorandum to the Pollachi Sub-Collector, J. Chandrakumar stating that officials were fining even those truck operators who transported just three units of sand in one single load. Officials clarified that only two units per truck was permitted and loading of trucks beyond this will be seen as an offence.
Truck operators said that following hike in fuel prices and to control the soaring prices of construction materials, the official machinery had given verbal consent for transportation of up to three units of sand per truck. The truck operators had reportedly planned to go on a strike from Tuesday to demand a concrete assurance from the official machinery for relaxing norms. Nearly 400 trucks in Pollachi and Udumalpet would be taking part in the strike.
