Students of Stanes Higher Secondary School have won several prizes for their school at the Anglo Indian Schools’ State-level athletics meet held in Chennai recently. In the competition, which had over 40 schools taking part, the Stanes students excelled in almost all track and field events. They are now busy preparing for the zonal level meet to be held here next month.
According to the Physical Education Teacher, Geetha Ponon, the students devoted three to four hours daily before and after class for practice. “The zonal meet will give them a better opportunity to display their talents as one student can take part in at least five events,” she said. The girls bagged the second overall championship. The junior individual championship went to Akkshitha Suresh. She won the first place in 200m sprint and long jump. Achinthya Roopa Arul won the gold in the 100m dash. The junior team won the gold in 4X100m relay. The sub-junior team from the school won the silver in the 4X100m relay.
The boys, with guidance from their physical director H.A. Balakrishnan, participated in events such as 100m and 200m dash, shotput, discus and high jump and came out in flying colours. They also won several prizes in the 800 m long distance race. The students had also taken part and won several prizes in the State-level meet held last year at Yercaud. The meet was an opportunity to meet and interact with students from various schools, the students said collectively. They were also looking forward to the zonal meet as they felt their confidence had improved.
