50,000 Industries Protest Against Power Cut

Lakhs of small, tiny and cottage industrial units in Tamil Nadu downed shutters on Wednesday to protest against the long hours of power cut. They slammed the government for not taking steps to improve the capacity utilisation. Tamzhaga Cottage & Tiny Industries Association said the tiny units, without generators, are the worst hit by the high fuel cost and power cut. It said the government should ensure five-day power supply a week without any cut. The association said the new industries, which have signed MoUs in the last two years, should meet their power needs through internal generation.

In Coimbatore, industry bodies representing over 50,000 large, medium, small and micro industries along with textiles mills, protested the power cuts. Codissia president K Ilango said the estimated production loss in industries due to Wednesday’s closure will be about Rs 100 crore. Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) chairman KV Srinivasan said the textile industry providing direct and indirect employment to almost one crore people, would come to a halt in the absence of a solution for the power shortage. The industry bodies want the government to make use of the 3000 mw captive generation capacity lying idle by providing diesel at low cost.
