TNAU & BPCL Inks MoU

Following the demonstration of producing bio-diesel from jatropha, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has inked am MoU with Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) for research in producing bio-diesel from algae. “The broad objective of the MoU is to develop a pilot plant technology for bio-diesel production from algae and also from petroleum industries wastes,” said Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AECRI) dean A Sampath Rajan. The Department of Bioenergy, AECRI, TNAU, Coimbatore and BPCL, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, will undertake the research jointly for a tentative period of three years at a cost of Rs 30 lakh.

Mr Rajan said, the university has been researching on alternative sources of energy for the past 15 years. BPCL has been exploring sources such as solar and biodiesel apart from petroleum products. He said algae contains 40% to 50% of oil. “We will screen different varieties of algae before growing the select best varieties,” he said.
