Corp Watching Closely Drinking Water

A Coimbatore Corporation official checks chlorine content in drinking water on Wednesday. Already facing flak for water-logging across the city, the Coimbatore Corporation is looking to avoid trouble on another front: drinking water. The Corporation’s water supply officials began on Wednesday the monitoring of the quality of drinking water supplied under the Siruvani and Pilloor schemes. And, health officials also wanted people to consume boiled water, to avoid diseases such as typhoid, cholera and acute-gastroenteritis.

“After filtering water, people should boil it for 15 minutes, including rolling boiling for five minutes. Only then will the water be safe for drinking,” Assistant City Health Officer R. Sumathi said. Water samples were lifted from the main service reservoir of the Pilloor scheme at Ganapathy to check for chlorine content. “We found the required 0.2 gm of chlorine per 1,000 litres of water,” Assistant Engineer K. Karuppusamy said. Checking chlorine content was routine, but extra attention was being bestowed in drinking water because of rain.

Poor quality of water could lead to health problems and the Corporation was wary of trouble during monsoon. Apart from the two main service reservoirs of the schemes, chlorine content would be checked at 43 overhead tanks at the tail-end areas of supply across the city. The primary chlorination was done at Siruvani or at Velliyangadu (for Pilloor scheme). Secondary chlorination was done at the supply end if the content was found to be inadequate.
