Be Carefull In Diwali - Eye Surgeons Told

Eye surgeons in the city have advised people to keep a close watch on children when they burst crackers or light sparklers during Deepavali celebrations. They have said that in case of injuries to the eye, medical help must be got immediately. Medical Director of The Eye Foundation D. Ramamurthy has said in a release that children or adults should not bend close to the crackers while lighting these. If a cracker burst had caused an injury to the eye, the affected person should not rub it. “Cover the eye with an empty ice cream cup, tape it and rush the injured person to an eye doctor,” he said.

Public needing guidance on managing such injuries could contact the hospital on the following phone numbers: Coimbatore: 0422-2544242/23, Tirupur: 0421-2232331/34. Chief Ophthalmologist of Lotus Eye Care Hospital Selva K. Sundaramurthy said most of the eye injuries could result in permanent loss of vision. But, these injuries could be prevented through some precautions like keeping the face away from the cracker being lighted.

The surgeon pointed out that the number of eye injury cases during Deepavali rises every year. The lack of precaution was one of the main reasons for injuries. And, children were the most affected. If the chemical used in the cracker entered the eyes, wash them immediately and get an eye doctor’s help, he said.
