Corp's 24 Hour Water Supply

The Coimbatore Corporation has organised for October 31 a meeting with experts to discuss the problems in the existing drinking water supply system and also how it can implement the project for 24-hour supply. The meeting had originally been slated for today , but was postponed by a week. It has been organised to facilitate an interface between the councillors of the Corporation and water supply experts.

The meeting is expected to point out the difficulties in the present system that impede round-the-clock supply and what is to be done under the new scheme to make the much dreamt of 24-hour supply a reality. The Corporation has also postponed to October 30 its monthly ordinary meeting of the Council. The Council met as scheduled on Thursday, but adjourned after condoling the death of Congress councillor from Ward 62 Lalithaa Pasupathy. She died in the early hours of October 18, following a heart attack.

According to sources in the Corporation, the civic body is planning to construct 80 dwellings at Singanallur in the city for its conservancy workers. A resolution on this will be placed in the Council at the October 30 meeting. This is a major scheme of the Corporation and it wants the dwellings to be located in the city itself as the workers, who are on various shifts, resent the idea of being located far away from the city. Four blocks with 32 houses have been proposed at an outlay of Rs.2 crore on Bazaar Street at Singanallur.

Five more blocks with 48 dwellings have been planned on Pioneer Mill Road at Rs.3 crore. Thursday’s meeting was also scheduled to discuss a key infrastructure improvement project: the linking of the 100 Feet Road with Avanashi Road. The link, in the form of a road and a bridge, is to come up between the electric crematorium at Pappanaickenpalayam and S.N.R. Sons College. The Corporation will discuss with the elected members the acquisition of more than an acre from private owners for this purpose.
