More than 300 activists of the Viduthalai Ciruthaigal Katchi (VCK) were removed by the police at eight places in the district on Thursday when they attempted rail blockade and demonstrations to demand the Central Government’s intervention in Sri Lanka. The activists burnt Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in effigy at Madathukulam near Udumalpet and Podanur near Coimbatore city. They attempted rail blockade at Singanallur, Irugur, Coimbatore North, Coimbatore Railway Junction, Pollachi and Tirupur.

They raised slogans demanding that India should work for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka and ensure protection for the Tamils living thereOur Special Corresponde-nt adds from Salem: The VCK cadres took out a protest rally in Salem and blocked the road leading to Salem Railway Junction for nearly 30 minutes on Thursday. They also broke the police cordon and barged into the junction premises to stage a rail roko to highlight the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils. They raised slogans against the Sri Lankan President. The VCK high command had announced a state-wide rail picketing agitation on Thursday to save the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Despite the presence of a Deputy Commissioner of Police and a strong police contingent, the 200 VCK cadres took out the rally on the narrow stretch of the single road that led to Railway Junction from Sooramangalam police station, which caused many to miss their trains. Buses and other vehicles were diverted. People have been demanding for long that agitations and allied activities that hamper the movement of general public and passengers particularly in the stretch between the Sooramangalam Police station junction and Salem Railway Station should be banned.

Agitations near the Salem Junction have almost become a routine affair. Many get stranded as they miss their trains, of which many are long-distance ones and also not running on daily schedules. Police and District administration must announce the zone a sterilised one, pointed out a resident. Meanwhile, a few students from the Salem Law College also attempted to burn the Sri Lankan President in effigy.
