'E-Velanmai' Project Launched

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based 'E-Velanmai', a project to provide expert advice to farmers using ICT tools, has been launched in Palar Basin of Parambikulam Aliyar Project, for a five-year period starting from 2007-12. The Kumarapalayam Water Users Association (K-WUA) has been selected for operationalisation of the scheme of technology transfer under Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management Project.

The objective is to provide agro-expert advice in a timely manner to the farmers of K-WUA using ICT tools like digital camera, internet and mobile phones on a regular basis (typically once a week), a Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) press release said today. To enhance participation of farmers in scientific farming, a nominal membership fee based on the size of the farm operated by farmers of K-WUA was collected for delivery of agricultural extension services by E-Velanmai (E-Agriculture). Members would be trained on how to take photographs of pest damaged crop specimens, uploading the photo to the TNAU scientists and receiving the technical recommendationa over mobile/internet e-mail personally.
