Annual General Meeting Of ICOCI

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has sought an integrated urban development authority for the city. This was one of the resolutions passed at the annual general meeting of the chamber held here recently. The authority should cover land use, building construction, roads, transport, water and drainage infrastructure. The city also needed an expanded airport with direct flights to European destinations.

The chamber pointed out that more than 100 scheme roads were proposed in the Master Plan 12 years ago. Smaller cities such as Tiruchi, Salem and Thanjavur had rings roads. But, Coimbatore, though highly industrialised, did not have a ring road. Ring roads would help avoid traffic congestion within the city and enable smooth flow of traffic. “We request for speedy implementation of the ring roads on priority basis,” according to a resolution. The National Highways here, including Coimbatore-Avinashi, Coimbatore-Mettupalayam, Coimbatore-Palakkad, should be connected by a circular, six-lane road by the end of next year.
