S.P. Tiwari, Deputy Director General (Education), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi (left) addressing a meeting on niche area of excellence at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. “Since there is a problem in rightly conceptualising niche areas, institutions are facing difficulty in implementing projects under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) funded schemes,” S.P. Tiwari, Deputy Director General (Education), ICAR, New Delhi, said here on Friday.

He was inaugurating the second annual group meeting on the ICAR funded “Niche Area of Excellence – Strengthening and Development of Agricultural Education” at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). “This programme concentrates on research, training and education. Importance should be given to human resources development to build up master trainers. The programme will not support extension activities,” he said.

The programme was launched by the ICAR in agriculture universities in the State and four ICAR institutes during the X Five Year Plan with the objective of achieving excellence in teaching, research, consultancy and other services. TNAU was one of the stakeholders, implementing the project “Improvement and Popularisation of Bio-fuels,” for five years.

G.C. Tewari, Assistant Director General (Education Planning & Development), ICAR, asked scientists involved in the programme to think and work like entrepreneurs. B. Chandrasekaran, Director of Research, TNAU, said the project of the TNAU was identified to generate alternative fuels such as bio-diesel from the feedstock of jatropha, pongamia and other oil seeds. The Centre of Excellence in Bio-fuels set up for the purpose was involved in research with a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating 17 disciplines. TNAU supported 24 post-graduate and doctoral students to undertake research in bio-fuel crops. It regularly conducted training programmes to popularise bio-fuels to stakeholders.
