Combined Water Supply Scheme

A combined water supply scheme from Thirumurthy dam is to be implemented from Dhali canal to Madathukulam, Sankaramanallur, Komaralingam, Kaniyur town panchayats and 112 nearby rural habitations in the district. A release from the Collector, V. Palanikumar, said that of this the town panchayats and 73 rural habitations would have their drinking water source from river Amaravathy. The remaining 39 habitations under the project area are at present supplied drinking water from local bore well source. Due to continuous failure of monsoon in the last decade, Amaravathy went dry during summer.

Based on the representation of the public and their representatives to provide permanent water supply, a proposal was mooted to provide water supply to these local bodies. The State Government had accorded administrative approval for execution at a cost of Rs. 28.764 crore. Based on the 2001 census population of 1,45,003, the project had been envisaged in such a way that it would serve the population of 2,05,519 persons at the ultimate stage of the project in the year 2040. It was proposed to draw 13.61 mld of raw water from the Dhali canal near Thirumurthy dam and treat the same in the proposed treatment plant at Thirumurthy Nagar.
It was proposed to lay 160 km of pipeline to convey the treated water to the service reservoirs and distribute the same to the public. The per capita cost of the scheme would be Rs. 1,824 and the cost per 1,000 litres of water would be Rs. 9.45. The scheme would be implemented with 80 per cent State Government grant and 20 per cent local body /public share in town panchayats and with 100 per cent State Government grant in rural habitations.
