CODISSIA Planned More Interactive Programmes

Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) and the Commissionerate of Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax, Coimbatore, plan to organise more programmes periodically on the needs of the industries here. Association president K. Ilango and the Commissioner of Central Excise, Coimbatore, C. Rajendiran, told presspersons here on Thursday that the help centre established on the CODISSIA premises in 2005 guided entrepreneurs on issues related to Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax.

Apart from the centre, it was proposed to organise more interactive programmes. “The aim is to achieve better compliance,” Mr. Rajendiran said. Mr. Ilango added that entrepreneurs should also be aware of the various credits available. Similar programmes were planned in Tirupur and Pollachi too. “The help centre is an ambitious project,” they said. Programmes were planned on specific issues and for specific sectors. One such was held here on Thursday.

Mr. Rajendiran said that export performance was good in Coimbatore. However, excise revenue collection during the first six months of this financial year from Coimbatore, Pollachi and Tirupur areas was less against the same period last year. Service Tax revenue was almost the same. “Hopefully, there will be a turnaround in the second half of this fiscal,” he said. About 90 companies in this region were paying more than Rs. 1 crore Central Excise (annual cash payment). A study showed that 66 of them were not doing well, he said.
