Savarimuthu who was at Coimbatore to attend the Defence pension adalat organised by the Controller of Defence Accounts (CDA), Chennai, returned to Villupuram a happy man.

Discharged from service in March 2008, he did not get pension even after the issue of Pension Payment Order. His case was resolved after he registered his grievance with the CDA. He got the maximum pensionery benefits (Rs. 8.6 lakh) on the first day of the adalat that took off on Thursday. Held in Coimbatore for the first time, the adalat witnessed a steady flow of ex-servicemen and their family members from various parts of the State who came to air their pension-related grievances at the 110 Infantry Battalion (TA), where the adalat is being held till Friday.

The CDA had called for registrations earlier on, to which more than 400 Defence and family pensioners had responded from all over the State. According to Anuradha Mitra, Controller of Defence Accounts, Chennai, 219 cases were settled even before the adalat held its sitting here. The rest were to be addressed in the two-day exercise.

“Some 78 pensioners have financially benefited and the total financial value generated as a result of the intervention of the adalat is Rs. 36.34 lakh. The adalat is also a forum at which pensioners and representatives from organisations like public sector banks, treasury officials, pension associations, etc., which are stakeholders, can interact”.
