Police Decided To Enforce Road Rules Strictly

The police in West Zone have decided to enforce road rules strictly as 2,488 people have lost their lives in 9,059 accidents in the last ten months of this year, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Pramod Kumar, told reporters here on Tuesday. The West Zone comprises Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem Rural, Salem city, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore Rural and the Nilgiris districts.

The major reason for fatal accidents were drunken driving, speeding, long hours of driving without rest, cleaners driving trucks, competition among bus drivers and talking to phones while driving. The police in West Zone had in the last ten months had registered more than one lakh cases on charges of violating road rules. In Coimbatore rural district, 821 people had lost their lives in 2,087 accidents. In Erode 1,627 accidents occurred and 460 people had lost their lives. In the Nilgiris in 182 accidents 49 people had lost their lives, he said.
