Postal Staff Given Training To Handle Passport Applications

Coimbatore Passport Officer B. Balamurugan imparting training to the staff of the Department of Posts at the passport office in Coimbatore on Saturday. The Coimbatore Passport Office on Saturday conducted a training programme for postal staff from 20 head post offices and sub-post offices in Western Region for handling passport application sales, processing and online transmission of the same. The passport office here has jurisdiction over Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris districts.

Talking to The Hindu, the Coimbatore Passport Officer, B. Balamurugan, said that the Ministry of External Affairs was keen on taking passport services closer to the people. The designated Head Post Offices and sub-post offices would sell applications at Rs. 20 and would accept filled in applications. The postal staff were trained on processing the forms, verifying the documents, scrutiny and transmission of forms through online. For every application processed, the Ministry of External Affairs would give Rs. 100 per application to the postal department.
