The meeting was attended by District Panchayat Chairman C.R. Ramachandran, Collector V. Palanikumar, Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Deputy Chairman of District Panchayat Anandan, Corporation Councillor V.K.S.K. Senthilkumar and a host of other members.
The meeting discussed the plight of motorists using Mettupalayam Road and pointed out that the entire stretch had become battered making it unsafe to travel. The NHAI Project Director, Ramanathan, said that an estimate has been drawn up for Rs. 3 crore to improve the road surface and tenders would be floated by December 15. The works would commence by January 15, next year.
On widening of Mettupalayam Road, NHAI officials said that with tenders about to be floated for Neelambur–Mettupalayam bypass road, there was no scope for further improvement to the existing road. The Collector said that if the repair works were going to take more time, the NHAI would immediately hand over the work to the State Highways Department. State Highways Divisional Engineer K. Vellingiri said that if the NHAI came forward the Department would take over the road.
The other subjections that came up for discussion included the need for desilting the 400 acre lake at Kothavadi in Kinathukkadavu union and cleaning up of all its inlet canals for effective storage of water to recharge the ground water table in the area. Mr. Senthilkumar said that the Murugan theatre premises belonging to Koopidu Vinayaga temple below Avanashi Road flyover under the maintenance of HR&CE Department should be converted into a parking area.
