SHG Members Trained In Disaster Management

Women Self-Help Group members being trained in disaster management at a programme organised by the United Nations Development Programme in Coimbatore on Friday. As many as 500 members of the Women’s Self Help Group members were provided training on rescue measures in the event of fire accidents and earthquake disasters.

According to S. Vanitha, Project Officer of Urban Earth Quake Vulnerability Reduction Project funded by the United Nations Development Programme, the objective was to ensure capacity building for all sections of the society. The programme aims at capacity building for all sections of the people to reduce the vulnerability to earth quakes and ensure preparedness of the people for managing the situation. There is a special focus on Chennai and Coimbatore that falls under seismic zone III. The programme is for training engineers, architects, masons, construction workers, town planners, student community, teachers, administrative staff and police at the community level.


The programme conducted at St.Francis Convent on Tiruchi Road on Friday dealt with imparting training to 500 members of the various self-help groups on the measures to be undertaken in rescue of victims of fire and earth quake. The programme was organised in co-ordination with Mahalir Thittam. Fire and Rescue Services Department officials were resource persons. The programme also has a component wherein people from the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) would provide training on rescue and medical aid. Training would be held in two batches, each for two days: November 28 and 29 and December 1 and 2.
