Skill Development Initiative

The Employment and Training Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Human Resources Development Department of the Government of India have instituted a skill development initiative for ensuring employment skills among those without a sound educational qualification.

According to a release, the training will be offered by Industrial Training Institute (ITI) on Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore and Industrial Training Institute for Women and the Institute at Tirupur on Dharapuram Road. School dropouts, those in semi-skilled jobs, those who have passed out of ITIs, and those with a minimum qualification of Class V (passed) can make use of the training.


The objective of the programme is to equip talented hands (but those without formal training and certificate) so that they become employable. The training will be offered in association with industries. Those who successfully complete it will be given certificates from the National Council for Vocational Training. The fee will be Rs.500 for 90 hours of training. For 91 to 180 hour modules, the fee will be Rs.1,000 and for those with181 to 270 hours, the fee will be Rs.1,500. Modules of more than 270 hours of instruction will be Rs.2,000.


Candidates from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes category will get a 25 per cent fee waiver. Those who complete the training successfully will get the course fee and examination fee refunded completely. For the basic level training, the candidates should have a minimum qualification of Class V. Training will be imparted at the ITIs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on week days and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.


The courses offered will be in the basic level and they include four-wheeler mechanism, electrical training, power supply UPS, converter servicing, turning and milling besides surface grinding, welding using gas, welding using arc, fitting and measurements, refrigeration and air conditioning, computer, MS Office and Internet. The courses are open to both men and women. At the ITI for women, MS Office, Internet training and desk top publishing will be imparted. Tirupur ITI will offer basic electrical training.
