Central Prison Gets Examination Centre Status

Inmates of the Coimbatore Central Prison writing the Eighth Standard Public Examination (Private Study) on Monday. With the Directorate of the Government Examinations according the status of examination centre for Coimbatore Central Prison, for the first time 48 convict prisoners took their Standard VIII Government examinations at the prison on Monday.

The prison sought examination centre status to enable the inmates to get some formal education. The Superintendent of Central Prison, Coimbatore, P. Govindarajan, said that prison administration was making efforts to equip the prisoners with skills and knowledge to lead a comfortable life on their discharge. The efforts included imparting of employable skills through vocational training besides ensuring formal and informal education. On discharge, the prisoners should not find it difficult for them to face society. This was being done to ensure that prisoners who are victims of circumstances are never forced to return to crime. Chief Invigilator for the examinations, Nakeeran, headmaster of the Government Higher Secondary School, Chennanur, Jailor R. Anbazhagan and Sociology expert V.K. Chinnasamy and others took part.
