Egg Price Come Down

After 41 days of fluctuation in price, the farm gate price of egg returned to the normal price band of Rs 2, when the National Egg Coordination Committee (Necc), Namakkal zone, announced the daily rates at India’s poultry hub on Wednesday.

With the reduction in farm gate price, the retail price of an egg is expected to hover around Rs 2.25 to Rs 2.50. When contacted Necc Namakkal zone coordinator, V S Balasubramaniam told ET that it was usual for the egg prices to come down during Karthigai season. “Even the announcement of bird flu outbreak in Assam hasn’t affected Namakkal zone much. Only around 10 lakh eggs were being exported to Muscat and the quantity would be consumed locally,” he said.

The other gulf countries have not yet given permission to import eggs and this new flu outbreak doesn’t have much impact here, he added. “We mainly take into account the prevailing rates in north India and fix the Namakkal zone rate. Since prices have been coming down there, we have also reduced it,” Mr Balasubramaniam said. The Namakkal zone of Necc, comprising Kerala and entire Tamil Nadu except Chennai, North Arcot and South Arcot, produces 2.5 crore eggs per day.
