“Today, many of India’s challenges, particularly in higher education, are the same as our own in the West. Our 21st century societies are all driven by technology, and those of us who are responsible for educating the technology innovators of the future, share the same challenges,” Sorel Reisman, Professor of Information Systems and Decision Sciences, California State University, the U.S., said here on Thursday.

He was inaugurating an international conference on “Global Challenges in Engineering Education and Research” at the PSG College of Technology. “While many if not all of us here today face the same challenges, they should be seen in the framework of India’s role in educating her engineers. We are all aware of India’s world position in outsourcing in call centres and in providing universities with outstanding scholars. But, the challenges Indian faculty might be facing in engineering education and research in this era is never given focus,” Mr. Reisman said.

A. Kandaswamy, Head of Department, Department of Bio Medical Engineering, said the current engineering education system had to address the threats of diminishing natural resources, innovations, changing technology, environmental problems and blurring of disciplinary boundaries. Adequate measures had to be taken to educate present day engineers. G. Rangaswamy, Managing Trustee, PSG and Sons’ Charities, R. Rudramoorthy, Principal, and N. Subramaniam, president, PSG Tech Alumni Association, spoke.
