NCW Taking Investigation The Daeth Of Indian Women Married To NRIs

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken up for investigation the death of eight Indian women married to NRIs in the US, a NCW member said on Wednesday. The commission took up the matter after some complaints by relatives and other reports came following the increasing number of failed NRI marriages and subsequent deaths, which were shown to be suicides, NCW member Nirmala Venkatesh told reporters here.

To create awareness among parents and the girls who are being married to NRIs, the NCW has set certain guidelines and the Centre and the External Affairs ministry would be urged to frame rules and implement them, she said. Stating that Punjab, with 20,000 cases of "NRI marriage failures" topped the states in India, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, she said girls should take an initiative to verify the antecedents and background of prospective NRI bridegrooms before agreeing for the marriage.

States should execute different rules and regulations and the police should take steps to prevent exploitation of the girls, Nirmala said. The girls and their parents should have a proper knowledge of existing laws with regard to marriage in foreign countries, she said. The Indian personal law was very much applicable abroad in case of marital discord and women could get justice there, she added.
