TV & DVD Players To Schools To Improve English Speaking Skills
District Collector V. Palanikumar has said that 1,734 schools in the district have been provided with television sets and DVD players in order to improve the English speaking skills of the students. According to an official release, Mr.Palanikumar said that teachers need to keep pace with the changes happening around them in order to encourage the children to imbibe new and creative learning practices. Only through such measures could quality and effective education be imparted.
This year, 57 primary schools would be upgraded to middle schools. Every school would have at least three class rooms, a kitchen, and a toilet. Works were on for each school at an outlay of Rs.9.75 lakh and construction works to the tune of Rs.5.56 crore had been taken up. More than 2,000 village education committees and block resource centres had been set up. About 200 school level centres were functioning through which 4,725 students had been enrolled in schools.
Last year (2007-2008), Rs.34 crore was spent on SSA. For the current academic year, Rs.62.79 crore was allocated. Going by the school drop-out statistics, alternative education modules had been brought in place. Through the District Rehabilitation Office, students with physical disabilities would be given assistance. Heads of schools were asked to ensure hygienic surroundings besides basic amenities such as drinking water and sanitation facilities.
