Coimbatore Vizha - Spirit Of Coimbatore

The Coimbatore Chapter of Young Indians along with various other socially conscious associations and groups in the city, will organise ‘Coimbatore Vizha,’ an event celebrating the spirit of Coimbatore. Opening on January 3, the nine-day event will encapsulate the city’s uniqueness – its culture, tradition, past and present. It hopes to offer the city-dwellers and visitors the experience of being in Coimbatore.

Its rich historical background, entrepreneurial acumen, culinary tradition, and appreciation of art and culture will be brought out. “It is about time we understood the soul of Coimbatore and cherished it. The event is not about mindless celebration. It is about evoking a sense of oneness with the place,” said Shankar Vanavarayar, Chair - Coimbatore Vizha and Chief Executive, Sri Sakthi Textiles. Beginning with a multi-faith prayer, the events would include heritage walks, talks, and exhibitions, eco-awareness programmes, tree plantation drives, bird watching, quiz competitions for schools and the general public and a 20/20 cricket tournament for college and school students.

A piano concert, film festival, treasure hunt, music and dance programmes, a marathon, a photo exhibition, food festival and several other cultural events have been lined up too. More than 10,000 saplings would be planted in a single day. A vintage car display at G.D.Naidu Museum and a display of works of budding artists on Race Course would be other attractions. More than 20 organisations including leading hospitals, educational institutions, social welfare associations and industrial outfits would participate.

The short-film contest for college students would encourage students to make documentary, fiction or animation films on the history and legacy of the city, its culture or the contributions made by it towards the environment. A student could submit only one entry in each category. The length should not exceed ten minutes. The best three films would be selected in each category and screened on the final day of the Vizha (December 11.) All the entries would be screened at various venues of the Vizha.
