Bus Runs Over Crowd

Efforts on to remove a victim trapped under the bus on Sathy Road in Coimbatore on Wednesday. Five persons were killed and seven others injured when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus ran over a crowd on Tuesday morning. The driver of the bus, which was proceeding from Gandhipuram to Sivanananda Colony, lost control while trying to avoid a two-wheeler.


M. Seethalakshmi (45), an employee in a private company; Balasubramani (50), a medical representative; and John Catherine Mary (30), a lab technician; were killed on the spot. Periyamani (49) and Ramar (60) of Kulakkarai succumbed to injuries in hospital. The injured were, Syed Ismal of Punjai Puliampatti, a painter; Palanisamy; Subbu, a fish merchant; Ramanathan (20) of Rathinapuri; Palaniammal (41) and Poovathal (41) of Muthu Mariamman Koil in North Coimbatore; and Sagar of Rathinapuri. The condition of one of the injured was said to be critical.



Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy; City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali; Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini; Mayor R. Venkatachalam; and Collector V. Palanikumar visited the scene and called on the injured in a hospital. The bus driver was arrested.
