Coimbatore AU Will Add Another 45 Colleges

Anna University, Coimbatore, will add another 45 colleges to take the total number to 148 in 2008-09, Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan told .Coimbatore would get the maximum with 19; while Salem would get eight, Erode three, Namakkal seven, Karur three, Krishnagiri two and Dharmapuri three. In addition, 23 stand-alone institutions would be added. The university, when set up here in February 2006, had 55 engineering colleges. In 2007 it added on 16 to take the figure to 71. In 2008 it was 103. In the ensuing academic year it would be 148. There are chances of it increasing further, according to the Vice-Chancellor.


With respect to the new courses, Mr. Radhakrishnan said, they would be offered in the two colleges – Anna College of Engineering and Technology – that would be set up under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode in Coimbatore and Hosur. The courses are: B.E. in Energy Engineering, B. Tech. in Nanotechnology and B. Tech. in Web and Mobile Technology. Students could opt for these courses in the single window counselling. Since the concept of autonomy was not being practised in the true sense of the word in the autonomous colleges, the Vice-Chancellor said that affiliated colleges of the university would not be granted autonomy hereafter.
