The deal goes like this: For every 42-pound Washington apple carton that is purchased, the buyer receives a “lucky draw” coupon. Each week a drawing will be held in each of the three markets and a “Mega Draw” will be held in May. Prizes will include televisions, music systems, refrigerators, mobile phones and the grand prize – a motorcycle. The state is the largest apple producer and exporter in the nation, and more than one-half of the Washington apple crop goes to foreign markets such as Mexico, Canada and Taiwan each year.
The state’s growers have been trying to build up the market for apples in China and India. Washington apples hold the highest market share of fresh apples imported into India. From September 2008 through the first half of March, Washington apple exported 663,691 boxes to India, an increase of 18 percent from the corresponding period in 2007-08.
“India is an important market for Washington Apples. While the vast majority of all Washington apples exported to India are Red Delicious, the Indian consumer has proven to have interest in all Washington varieties - Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala and several other varieties have made appearances, tantalizing the Indian consumer. The 300 million middle-class consumers are the driving force behind the increase in imports of Washington apples,” said Todd Fryhover, president of the Washington Apple Commission. “We are very excited with this wholesaler promotion as it will encourage more wholesalers and fruit sellers to try Washington apples and eventually reach more consumers.”
